X Ray Thoracolumbar Spine AP and Lateral View

AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray with the beam entering the front and exiting the back; the X‑ray tube is anterior and the detector posterior, often used when patients can’t stand. Lateral view is taken from the side, showing depth and sagittal alignment. Together they assess fractures, bone alignment, joint spaces, and chest or spine pathology.

An X-ray LS spine AP and lateral are two standard radiographs of the lumbosacral spine: anteroposterior (front-to-back) and lateral (side) views. They evaluate vertebral alignment, disc spaces, fractures, arthritis, spondylolisthesis and other bony abnormalities. The exam is quick, noninvasive, uses low‑dose radiation, and may be done standing for weight‑bearing assessment; remove metal from the waist.

A lateral view of the spine X-ray is a side-on radiograph that shows vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, spinal alignment and curvature (lordosis/kyphosis), and outlines the spinal canal and soft tissues. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, vertebral collapse and abnormal alignment, and complements AP/PA views for trauma assessment, chronic back pain evaluation and pre/postoperative planning.

The AP (anteroposterior) position for thoracic spine radiography places the patient supine or upright with the anterior chest toward the X‑ray tube and the posterior thorax against the image receptor. The central ray is perpendicular to the thoracic spine, centered about T7, with shoulders/arms moved forward or abducted to clear the field so C7 through L1 are visualized.

AP (anteroposterior) is a single frontal radiographic projection where x‑rays pass from front to back. Lateral is a single side‑to‑side projection. Each term denotes one view; together they provide two orthogonal views commonly obtained for chest, abdomen, spine, or limb imaging to assess alignment, localization, and pathology. Radiologists request both views to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Lateral in X-ray refers to a side view where the X-ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It reveals depth and spatial relationships of structures that overlap on front-to-back (AP/PA) views, helping localize lesions, fractures, or fluid and assess alignment. Common examples include lateral chest, cervical spine, and knee radiographs.
