An SI joint X-ray visualizes the sacroiliac joint bones and alignment, showing joint-space narrowing, sclerosis, erosions, osteophytes, ankylosis, fractures or calcifications. It helps detect degenerative osteoarthritis, sacroiliitis and structural changes, but is limited for early inflammatory or soft-tissue abnormalities; MRI or CT may be needed for subtle or acute pathology.

How to position for a SI joint X-ray?plus

Place the patient supine with pelvis square and legs extended. Center the detector to the midline at the level of the sacroiliac joints (just below the iliac crests) and take an AP pelvis/SI view. To profile each SI joint, obtain oblique views rotating the patient about 25–30° toward the side being examined so the targeted joint opens. Use gonadal shielding and suspend respiration for exposure.

Does SI joint pain require surgery?plus

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain rarely requires surgery. Most people improve with conservative care—rest/activity modification, physical therapy, medications, pelvic belts, and image-guided steroid injections or radiofrequency ablation. Surgery (SI joint fusion) is reserved for persistent, severe pain with confirmed SIJ dysfunction after exhaustive nonsurgical treatments. A spine or pelvic specialist should evaluate risks and expected benefits before considering fusion.

Is walking bad for SI joint pain?plus

Walking is not inherently bad; gentle, paced walking often helps SI joint pain by improving mobility and circulation. Avoid long, uneven, high‑impact or twisting walks. Use supportive shoes, consider a pelvic belt, engage your core, shorten your stride, and increase distance gradually. Stop for sharp or worsening pain and consult a healthcare professional or physiotherapist for personalized assessment and exercise guidance.

How to sleep with SI joint pain?plus

To sleep with SI joint pain, lie on your back with a pillow under your knees or sleep on your side with a firm pillow between knees to keep hips aligned. Use a medium-firm mattress or topper, apply heat or cold before bed, and do gentle nightly stretches. Avoid stomach sleeping. Use prescribed or OTC pain relief as advised and see a clinician if pain persists or worsens.
