X Ray Right Scaphoid view

The scaphoid view is a specialized wrist X‑ray that optimizes visualization of the scaphoid bone. It’s obtained with the wrist in ulnar deviation and the X‑ray beam angled toward the forearm to project the scaphoid free from overlapping bones. It’s used to detect scaphoid fractures; if radiographs are normal but pain persists, advanced imaging (CT or MRI) is often recommended.

For a suspected scaphoid fracture get a dedicated scaphoid series: PA (including PA with ulnar deviation/scaphoid view), lateral, and oblique wrist X‑rays. The scaphoid view uses ulnar deviation with a ~20° proximal beam tilt to better show the scaphoid waist. If initial films are normal but suspicion persists, immobilize and repeat imaging in 10–14 days or consider MRI/CT.

The right scaphoid is a boat-shaped carpal bone on the radial (thumb) side of the wrist. It sits just distal to the radius at the base of the thumb, bridging the proximal and distal carpal rows and articulating with the radius, lunate, trapezium and trapezoid. It lies in the floor of the anatomical snuffbox, is often palpable there, and is prone to fracture after a fall.

The best wrist X‑ray is a dedicated three‑view series: posteroanterior (PA), lateral, and oblique. This combination maximizes detection of carpal and distal radial fractures and assesses alignment. If a scaphoid fracture is suspected despite normal initial views, add a scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation) or repeat imaging after 10–14 days or use CT/MRI.

Scaphoid X‑ray is indicated at any age when there’s clinical suspicion after a fall onto an outstretched hand—especially with anatomical snuffbox tenderness, pain on thumb movement, or reduced grip. Scaphoid fractures are most common in adolescents and young adults (roughly teens to 30s), but children and older adults should be imaged when suspected. If initial X‑rays are normal but symptoms persist, repeat or advanced imaging is advised.

The scaphoid is a key wrist bone that links the proximal and distal carpal rows, transmitting forces from the hand to the forearm and supporting wrist stability. It helps enable smooth wrist movements—especially radial deviation—and maintains carpal alignment. Because much of its blood supply enters distally, fractures can compromise healing, making the scaphoid essential for both load-bearing and joint function.
