Skyline view of the patella (also called sunrise or axial view) is an X‑ray taken tangential to the patella with the knee flexed (commonly 30–45°). It shows the patellofemoral joint, patellar articular surface and trochlear groove, helping detect fractures, dislocation/subluxation, alignment problems and cartilage/degenerative changes. Often used in trauma and chronic anterior knee pain assessment.

Position the patient supine or sitting with the knee flexed 45–90° (more flexion increases tangency). Place the image receptor behind the distal thigh so the beam is tangential to the patella. Angle the central ray cephalad about 15–30° (adjust to flexion) and center on the patellofemoral joint. Collimate to the joint, use shielding, and ask the patient to remain still. Used to assess patellar fractures or maltracking.
