Mastoid lateral oblique X‑ray is a specialized radiographic projection that images the mastoid portion of the temporal bone and mastoid air cells in an oblique lateral view. It helps detect mastoiditis, temporal bone fractures, ossicular or middle‑ear pathology, and air‑cell opacification. It’s a quick, low‑dose exam often used as an initial assessment, though CT gives greater anatomic detail when required.

A mastoid X-ray is a plain radiograph of the mastoid bone behind the ear used to evaluate mastoid air cells and nearby middle‑ear structures. It helps detect mastoiditis, chronic or recurrent ear infections, bone erosion (for example from cholesteatoma), fractures, or complications of otitis media, and can aid preoperative assessment. A mastoid problem refers to inflammation or infection of the mastoid air cells in the bone behind the ear—most often mastoiditis that follows untreated middle ear infection. It can lead to serious complications if untreated, so medical assessment and antibiotic or surgical treatment may be needed.

A lateral oblique X‑ray is an angled side view taken with the patient and X‑ray beam rotated so structures that overlap on straight lateral images are seen more clearly. It’s used to evaluate facial bones, the mandible, jaw joints, sinuses or other lateral structures to identify fractures, infections, alignment problems or dental issues. Positioning and angle are adjusted to target the area of interest.
