X Ray Right Leg AP view

AP leg refers to an anteroposterior radiographic view of the lower leg, where the X‑ray beam passes from front (anterior) to back (posterior). It images the tibia and fibula—usually including the knee and ankle—to assess fractures, alignment, growth‑plate injuries and other bone pathology. A lateral view is typically obtained alongside the AP view for complete evaluation.

For a leg X‑ray two views are standard. AP (anteroposterior): patient supine or standing, affected leg fully extended, foot dorsiflexed so the patella faces upward; central ray aimed at the mid‑shaft, include knee and ankle. Lateral: patient lies on the affected side (or supine with leg rolled), knee flexed ~45°, patella perpendicular to the cassette. Immobilize and remove artifacts.

"AP view" means anteroposterior projection: the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body. It’s commonly used for bedridden or portable exams with the tube in front and detector behind the patient. AP views can magnify the heart and mediastinum compared with PA views, so technique and positioning affect interpretation.

An X-ray for leg pain primarily shows bone-related problems: fractures, dislocations, bone alignment, joint changes (arthritis), bone lesions, calcifications and some chronic infection signs. It does not reliably show soft tissue injuries (muscles, ligaments, tendons), early stress fractures, or nerve and vascular problems—these may need MRI, CT or ultrasound and clinical correlation.

The AP (anteroposterior) view of the knee is an X‑ray projection with the beam passing from anterior to posterior, usually taken with the patient supine or standing and the knee extended. It demonstrates the distal femur, proximal tibia and joint space to assess fractures, bone alignment, joint‑space narrowing and arthritis. Weight‑bearing AP views evaluate functional joint space and alignment under load.
