X RAY RIGHT KNEE LATERAL VIEW

A knee lateral view X-ray is a side‑view radiograph that visualizes the femur, tibia, fibula and patella in profile. It assesses bone alignment, joint space, fractures, dislocations, patellar position, and signs of arthritis or joint effusion. The image is taken with the knee slightly flexed to better show joint surfaces and soft‑tissue contours, aiding diagnosis of injury or degenerative change.

Position the patient on the affected side (lateral decubitus) or seated with the leg on the table. Flex the knee about 20–30° to relax the quadriceps and superimpose the femoral condyles. Place the cassette vertical against the medial knee and center the beam at the joint space (patellofemoral region). Include distal femur to proximal tibia/fibula, collimate tightly, and use gonadal shielding.

A skyline (axial or "sunrise") knee X‑ray is a tangential view taken with the knee flexed so the X‑ray beam skims the patella and femoral trochlea. It visualizes the patellofemoral joint surfaces and is especially useful for detecting patellar fractures, maltracking or subluxation, osteochondral injuries, and joint‑space narrowing that may be missed on standard AP or lateral views.

A 4-view knee X-ray is a plain radiograph series taken from four angles to evaluate the knee joint fully. Typical views include anteroposterior (AP), lateral, a patellar skyline (sunrise), and a tunnel/intercondylar or oblique view. Together they assess fractures, joint space narrowing, arthritis, alignment, patellar tracking and loose bodies. It’s quick, low-radiation and commonly used for trauma or chronic knee pain.

A lateral knee X‑ray can show osteoarthritic changes — osteophytes, subchondral sclerosis, cysts and obvious joint‑space narrowing — and helps assess patellofemoral and posterior tibiofemoral features. However, X‑rays demonstrate bony changes, not early cartilage loss or soft‑tissue pathology; weight‑bearing AP and skyline views are often used, and MRI is more sensitive for early disease and soft‑tissue assessment.

A lateral knee problem is pain or dysfunction on the outer side of the knee, commonly caused by iliotibial band syndrome, lateral meniscus tear, lateral collateral ligament injury, bursitis, or lateral compartment osteoarthritis. Symptoms include outer-knee pain, swelling, clicking, stiffness or instability. Diagnosis involves clinical assessment and imaging; treatment ranges from rest, physiotherapy and anti-inflammatories to injections or surgery for severe cases.
