X RAY RIGHT KNEE AP ERECT VIEW

The AP (anteroposterior) knee view is an X‑ray taken front‑to‑back to visualize the distal femur, proximal tibia and fibula, knee joint space and alignment. The patient lies supine or stands with the knee extended (or slightly flexed for comfort), patella centered, and the beam directed perpendicular to the joint. It detects fractures, dislocations, osteoarthritis and joint‑space narrowing; weight‑bearing AP views show load‑related changes.

The three standard knee X‑ray views are: anteroposterior (AP) — ideally weight‑bearing — to assess overall alignment, joint space and bone loss; lateral — side profile showing patella position, femoral condyles, tibial plateau and effusion; and skyline (axial/tangential) — to evaluate the patellofemoral joint, patellar alignment, and osteoarthritis assessment.

Costs vary by country and facility. In India a standard AP and lateral knee X‑ray typically costs about ₹200–₹1,000 at diagnostic centers. In the UK public care it’s free; private clinics charge roughly £20–£80. In the US out‑of‑pocket prices generally range from $50–$300. Prices depend on location, facility, and whether extra views or reporting are included—confirm locally.

Standard knee X‑rays include anteroposterior (AP) view with the patient supine or standing, leg extended and foot pointing straight, central beam at the joint. Lateral view is taken with the knee flexed about 20–30° (true lateral with femoral condyles superimposed). Patellofemoral (skyline) views use greater flexion (≈45–60°). Weight‑bearing AP views are taken standing to assess joint space under load.

Apophysitis (often seen as Osgood–Schlatter disease) is inflammation of the tibial tubercle growth plate at the knee, common in active adolescents. Repetitive running or jumping causes pain, swelling, and tenderness below the kneecap. Management is conservative: rest, activity modification, ice, NSAIDs, stretching, quadriceps strengthening, and physiotherapy; symptoms usually resolve after the growth plate closes.

To identify an AP (anteroposterior) chest view: first check the projection marker and patient position (supine/portable). If unlabelled, look for features of AP: relatively magnified cardiac silhouette, scapulae projected over the lung fields, more horizontal/low clavicles, shallow inspiration, and presence of monitoring lines or supine positioning. These signs indicate a bedside/AP rather than a standard PA upright film.
