X Ray Right Heel Lateral and AP View

AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray projection where the beam passes from the front to the back of the patient; often used when patients are supine or immobile, it provides a frontal image but can magnify anterior structures. Lateral view is taken from the side, producing a perpendicular image that shows depth and localization of abnormalities, clarifies overlapping structures, and complements the AP view.

A both-heel lateral view X-ray is a side-to-side radiograph of each heel that images the calcaneus (heel bone), subtalar joint and adjacent bones. Taking bilateral lateral views lets clinicians compare both sides and assess fractures, calcaneal spurs, alignment problems, arthritis or causes of heel pain. It aids diagnosis and treatment planning, including immobilization or surgery.

AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) of the body through to the back (posterior) onto the detector. It’s often used for supine or portable exams when patients can’t stand. AP images can magnify and widen the heart and mediastinum versus PA views, so interpretation must consider positioning and distance-related distortion.

A PA and lateral X-ray are two complementary chest radiograph views. The PA (posteroanterior) view is taken with the patient standing, X-rays passing from back to front, which reduces heart magnification. The lateral view is taken from the side, showing depth and location of abnormalities behind the heart or between lobes. Together they improve detection and localization of lung, heart, and pleural disease.

Lateral in an X-ray refers to a side-to-side view obtained with the X-ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other, perpendicular to frontal (AP/PA) views. It shows depth and separates overlapping structures, helping localize lesions, fractures or fluid. Patients are positioned with the named side against the image receptor; images are labeled right or left lateral accordingly.

Position the patient so the sagittal plane is parallel to the image receptor and the side of interest is closest to the receptor (e.g., left lateral for chest). Align the central X‑ray beam perpendicular to the receptor at the target level, collimate to the area, and immobilize the patient. Instruct breath‑hold for chest films, move arms out of the field, use shielding, and choose appropriate exposure settings.
