X Ray Right Foot AP View

A foot AP (anteroposterior) X-ray is a standard frontal radiograph where the X‑ray beam passes from front to back through the foot. It shows the metatarsals, tarsal bones and joints to detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, infections or bone lesions. The patient usually sits or lies with the plantar surface on the detector; it is often combined with lateral and oblique views for full assessment. Radiation exposure is low.

AP view means anteroposterior projection: the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the patient. It’s commonly used for supine or bedside/portable exams and in trauma. Compared with a PA view, AP increases magnification of anterior structures (e.g., the heart) and can reduce image quality, so interpretation must account for positioning and projectional distortion.

The best approach is a standard three‑view foot X‑ray: dorsoplantar (AP), lateral and a 30° medial oblique. This series provides the most complete assessment—oblique views better demonstrate metatarsals and tarsometatarsal joints, while the lateral view shows alignment and calcaneal position. For suspected calcaneal or ankle injuries, add targeted views like axial/plantodorsal or an ankle mortise.

Costs vary widely by country and whether care is public or private. In the UK an NHS X‑ray is free; private clinics typically charge about £30–£150. In India expect roughly ₹200–1,200. Position the patient with their anterior surface toward the X‑ray tube and their posterior surface against the image detector (supine or upright with back to detector). Center the targeted anatomy to the detector; align the central ray perpendicular to the receptor at the correct landmark (e.g., T7 for chest). Use appropriate exposure settings, collimate, place side and marker labels, instruct full inspiration and hold still, and apply shielding as needed.
