X Ray Right Foot AP and Lateral View

A foot AP (anteroposterior) and lateral X-ray are two standard radiographic views used to examine the bones, joints and soft‑tissue outline of the foot. The AP view shows forefoot and midfoot alignment and joint spaces; the lateral view shows arch height, hindfoot relation and fracture displacement. They detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, deformities and infection; the exam is quick, noninvasive and uses low radiation.

An AP lateral refers to two standard X‑ray projections taken at right angles: an anteroposterior (AP) view where X‑rays pass front‑to‑back, and a lateral view where they pass side‑to‑side. Together they provide perpendicular perspectives that improve detection of fractures, dislocations, alignment problems, or chest/lung pathology. AP is often used if a patient can’t stand; the lateral adds depth and location detail.

A lateral foot X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph showing the bones, joints and soft tissues in profile. It evaluates fractures, dislocations, joint alignment, arch height, foreign bodies and degenerative changes. The patient sits or lies with the foot’s medial side on the detector so the sagittal plane is parallel to the receptor; the X‑ray beam is centered on the midfoot.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side-to-side projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one lateral side of the body to the other, producing an image of structures in profile. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views to localize lesions, assess depth and alignment, and evaluate the lungs, spine, skull and joints, revealing abnormalities hidden on frontal films.

AP stands for anteroposterior. In an AP X‑ray the X‑ray beam travels from the anterior (front) of the body to the posterior (back). It’s commonly used when patients cannot stand for a standard PA view, such as bedbound or critically ill patients. AP projections can cause slight magnification and altered appearance of structures (for example, apparent cardiomegaly) compared with PA films.

The lateral foot refers to the outer side of the foot—the side facing away from the body’s midline. It includes bones (fifth metatarsal, cuboid), the lateral malleolus and peroneal tendons. This region helps balance and weight-bearing during gait and is prone to inversion sprains, peroneal tendon injuries and fifth metatarsal fractures. It is often assessed in foot and ankle exams.
