X RAY RIGHT ELBOW JOINT AP VIEW

For an AP (anteroposterior) elbow radiograph, the patient’s arm is extended with the forearm supinated so the epicondyles are parallel to the image receptor. The humerus and forearm lie in the same plane, the elbow joint is centered on the detector, and the central ray is directed at the mid-elbow (between medial and lateral epicondyles). If full extension isn’t possible, a supported partial AP is used.

AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) of the body to the back (posterior). The patient’s anterior surface faces the X‑ray tube with the detector behind them, often used for supine, seated, or portable exams when the patient cannot stand. AP films can magnify anterior structures (e.g., heart) and differ from PA views, so interpretation accounts for projectional distortion.

Standard elbow X-ray views include anteroposterior (AP), lateral, and oblique projections (internal and/or external oblique). The AP view shows joint alignment and the distal humerus; the lateral (typically at 90° flexion) best demonstrates the olecranon and joint effusion; oblique views visualize the radial head, coronoid, and joint margins. A dedicated radial‑head series may be added for suspected occult fractures.

AP view: patient sits or stands with arm extended and forearm supinated (palm up), elbow centered; beam perpendicular. Lateral view: elbow flexed about 90°, forearm rotated to a true lateral (thumb up), joint centered. Lead shielding and immobilization are used; technologists modify positioning for pain, ensure orthogonal images and use markers to label the side.

AP (anteroposterior) elbow X‑ray directs the beam front→back with the forearm supinated (palm up); it images the distal humerus and proximal radius/ulna with less overlap. PA (posteroanterior) directs the beam back→front with the forearm pronated (palm down); it gives a different projection of the radial head/neck and joint spaces. Positioning changes apparent alignment and bone overlap.
