X Ray Right Arm Ap And Axial View

AP (anteroposterior) X‑ray view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) of the body to the back (posterior) toward the detector. It’s often used for portable or supine exams when patients can’t stand. AP views can magnify or distort structures (for example the heart or clavicles) compared with PA views, and this is considered during interpretation.

An axial view (transverse) is a horizontal imaging plane that produces cross-sectional slices of the body, separating superior and inferior parts. Used in CT and MRI, it displays anatomy and pathology in thin layers for precise localization, measurement, and surgical planning. Images are typically presented with the patient’s right on the viewer’s left, aiding consistent interpretation across studies.

An AP (anteroposterior) view in a shoulder X-ray is taken with the X‑ray beam passing from front to back, producing a frontal image of the clavicle, acromioclavicular joint, scapula and humeral head. It assesses bone alignment, fractures, dislocations and joint space. Often obtained upright or supine and used with additional views (axillary or scapular Y) for full evaluation.

The axial (axillary) view of the shoulder is an X‑ray taken with the beam directed through the axilla to image the glenohumeral joint from below. It shows the humeral head–glenoid relationship, glenoid rim, coracoid, acromion and proximal humerus. It’s useful for identifying anterior/posterior dislocations, glenoid rim fractures and Hill–Sachs lesions; a modified (Velpeau) axillary view is used if abduction is painful.

For chest radiographs, a PA view is generally better than an AP view because it reduces cardiac magnification and gives more accurate heart size and clearer lung detail. AP is used when patients cannot stand (eg, portable or supine exams) but can exaggerate heart size and degrade image quality. Choice depends on patient condition and diagnostic goals.

AP (anteroposterior) is a single frontal radiograph obtained front-to-back. Lateral is a single side radiograph obtained perpendicular to the AP. Together they provide two orthogonal views that improve localization and assessment of anatomy and pathology, commonly used for chest, spine, and extremity imaging to better visualize alignment, lesions, air/fluid levels, and foreign bodies.
