X Ray Nasal Bone Lateral view

The lateral view of the nasal bone is a radiographic profile image that displays the nasal bones, nasal dorsum, septum and adjacent soft tissues in side projection. It helps assess fractures, bony displacement, contour deformities and nasal height. Obtained with the head in a true lateral position and the beam centered on the nose, it complements clinical examination and other views for injury or preoperative evaluation.

The primary X‑ray for suspected nasal fracture is a lateral nasal bones view to show displacement and angulation. An occipitomental (Waters’) view is often added to assess the nasal bones, septum and paranasal sinuses. For complex injuries or inconclusive X‑rays, CT imaging is preferred for more detailed evaluation and surgical planning.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In India a lateral nasopharynx X‑ray typically ranges roughly ₹300–₹1,500 at private clinics. In the UK it's usually free under public healthcare; private clinics charge about £50–£150. In the US prices commonly fall between $100–$500 or more depending on location, facility, and whether radiologist fees or follow‑up reports are included.

Plain nasal or sinus X‑rays are generally of limited value: they have low sensitivity and specificity for sinusitis and are not routinely recommended. CT imaging provides more detailed assessment for chronic or complicated sinus disease and facial fractures. X‑rays can detect gross fractures or foreign bodies but are less accurate; use is weighed against radiation exposure, especially in pregnancy and children.

Laterally to the external nose are the cheeks (zygomatic region) and the maxilla, which house the maxillary sinuses. Internally, the lateral nasal wall contains the inferior and middle conchae (turbinates), the ostiomeatal complex connecting the sinuses, and nearby infraorbital nerve and vessels beneath the orbit. These structures affect sinus drainage, facial sensation, and nasal airflow.

The nasal bones are two small oblong bones at the midline of the upper face that form the bridge (root) of the nose. Each nasal bone articulates superiorly with the frontal bone, laterally with the maxilla, and medially with its counterpart. They provide shape and structural support for the cartilaginous portion of the external nose.
