X RAY Lumbo Sacral Spine Skyline View

An X‑ray LS spine AP LAT is a radiographic exam of the lumbosacral spine using two views: anteroposterior (AP) and lateral (LAT). It images lumbar and sacral vertebrae to assess alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc-space narrowing, and causes of low back pain or trauma. The two quick, noninvasive views provide bone detail; CT or MRI may be needed for soft‑tissue or nerve evaluation.

LS (lumbar‑sacral) spine X‑rays can detect fractures and dislocations; vertebral compression; degenerative changes such as disc space narrowing, osteophytes and facet arthropathy; spondylolisthesis; spinal alignment abnormalities (scoliosis, kyphosis); congenital anomalies; signs of infection or bone tumor; and advanced osteoporosis with vertebral collapse or calcifications. They can’t reliably show early disc herniation or most soft‑tissue/spinal cord problems.

Position the patient in a true lateral (standing or lateral decubitus) with knees flexed to reduce lumbar lordosis, hips stacked, and shoulders and pelvis superimposed. Arms elevated or folded across the chest out of the field. Center the beam at the lumbosacral region (L4–L5 or L5–S1 depending on indication), include L1–S1, and use appropriate shielding and exposure settings.

A lumbosacral spine x‑ray is a plain radiograph of the lower back showing the lumbar vertebrae and sacrum. It’s a quick, noninvasive test used to assess bone alignment, fractures, degenerative changes (including disc space narrowing) and major structural problems. Usually obtained in frontal (AP) and lateral views, it helps evaluate lower back pain, trauma or suspected structural abnormalities with low radiation exposure.

A lateral (lat) view in X‑ray is a side‑on radiographic projection produced by passing the X‑ray beam through the body from one side to the other, creating a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views to show depth, relationships and locations of structures, detect effusions, fractures, vertebral alignment, or retrocardiac lesions. Positioning is side against the detector, standing or supine depending on the exam.

To prepare for a lumbosacral X-ray, wear loose clothing or a hospital gown and remove jewelry, belts and metal objects. Bring any referral and prior imaging. Inform staff if you are or might be pregnant. You usually won’t need fasting or contrast. Follow the technologist’s instructions—hold still and breathe as directed—and change positions briefly for different views.
