A lumbosacral spine x-ray is a low‑dose radiographic scan of the lower back that images the lumbar vertebrae and sacrum. It helps detect fractures, bone infections, arthritis, degenerative changes, alignment problems, and some tumors. The test is quick and noninvasive, usually taken in two or more views, but has limited ability to show soft tissues such as discs, nerves, or ligaments.

The lumbosacral lateral spine refers to the side view or region of the lower back where the lumbar vertebrae meet the sacrum (commonly L4–S1). It comprises vertebrae, intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments and nerve roots that bear weight and allow bending/rotation. This junction is commonly affected by degenerative changes, disc herniation, sciatica and spondylolisthesis.

Costs for a lumbosacral spine X‑ray vary widely: in the United States it typically ranges from about $100 to $1,000 (commonly $100–$300), in private UK clinics £50–£200 while NHS patients usually have it covered, and in India prices are roughly ₹300–₹2,500 (commonly ₹300–₹800). Lumbosacral AP lateral refers to two X‑ray views—anteroposterior (AP) and lateral—of the lumbosacral spine (lower back, L1–S1). These radiographs assess vertebral alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc space narrowing, and spondylolisthesis. They are quick, noninvasive tests used for back pain or trauma evaluation; CT or MRI may follow for soft‑tissue or neurologic detail.

Lumbar X‑ray risks are small but include radiation exposure that slightly increases lifetime cancer risk and higher risk to a developing fetus (so tell your provider if pregnant). X‑rays poorly show soft tissues (discs, nerves), can miss early fractures or infection, and may yield poor images in larger patients requiring repeat exposure. Incidental findings can lead to unnecessary further tests.

Usually you should remove clothing and any metal (jewelry, belts, bras with underwire) that covers the body area being X‑rayed because metal and dense fabric can obscure images. You may be asked to wear a hospital gown. For minor exams (e.g., limb or dental) your clothing may be left on if it doesn’t interfere. Always follow the radiographer’s instructions and tell them if you’re pregnant or have implants.
