X Ray Lumbar Spine AP & Lateral View

Lumbar spine AP and lateral are standard X‑ray projections of the lower back. AP (anteroposterior) is taken front‑to‑back to show vertebral bodies, pedicles and overall alignment. Lateral is a side view that demonstrates vertebral height, intervertebral disc spaces, facet joints and spondylolisthesis. Together they assess fractures, degeneration, alignment and other gross spinal pathology.

AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front of the body to the back; it’s often used for bedside or supine exams and can magnify mediastinal structures. Lateral view is a side‑to‑side projection taken at roughly 90° to AP, providing depth information and showing overlaps AP alone can miss—useful for fractures, lung fields, spine alignment, and chest pathology.

Patient supine or upright with hips centered and shoulders/pelvis aligned; legs extended (or slight knee flexion to reduce lumbar lordosis). Align the midsagittal plane with the image receptor. Direct the central ray perpendicular to the IR at the level of L3 (about 1.5–2 inches/4–5 cm above the iliac crest), collimate to include T12 to the sacrum. Suspend respiration for the exposure.

A lateral lumbar X‑ray provides a side view of the lower spine, showing vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, spinal alignment and curvature (lordosis). It detects fractures, vertebral collapse, spondylolisthesis, degenerative changes (osteophytes, disc-space narrowing), facet-joint changes, calcifications and major bone lesions. It has limited soft-tissue and nerve-root detail and cannot reliably show herniated discs or subtle canal pathology.

AP (anteroposterior) and Lat (lateral) are X‑ray projections. AP means the beam travels front-to-back, often used when patients can’t stand and giving a frontal view that may magnify structures. Lateral is a side-to-side projection providing a profile (sagittal) view, useful for depth localization and separating overlapping structures. Both are common in chest and musculoskeletal imaging.
