X Ray Left Wrist Scaphoid view

A scaphoid view is a dedicated wrist X‑ray projection optimized to visualize the scaphoid bone. It’s obtained with the wrist ulnar‑deviated (thumb side up) and the X‑ray beam angled to profile the scaphoid, improving detection of scaphoid fractures. Because early fractures can be occult, a normal scaphoid view with persistent pain often prompts repeat imaging or CT/MRI.

The left scaphoid is one of eight small carpal bones in the wrist, located on the thumb (radial) side. It sits in the proximal carpal row between the radius and the trapezium/trapezoid, forming part of the wrist joint. Easily felt in the anatomical snuffbox just distal to the radial styloid, it’s boat-shaped and commonly fractured after a fall on an outstretched hand.

The best wrist X‑ray depends on the clinical question: routine imaging uses posteroanterior (PA) and true lateral views to assess carpal alignment and joint spaces. For suspected scaphoid fractures, a dedicated scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation) improves visualization. Additional oblique or carpal‑tunnel views can be added as needed to clarify specific bone or soft‑tissue concerns.

A scaphoid series typically includes posteroanterior (PA), lateral and oblique views plus a dedicated scaphoid view (PA with 20–30° ulnar deviation or a Stecher/Robert view). These optimize visualization of the waist and proximal pole. If initial X-rays are normal but clinical suspicion (anatomic snuffbox tenderness) persists, immobilize and repeat radiographs in 10–14 days or get MRI/CT/bone scan.

A scaphoid X‑ray is indicated at any age when there’s wrist trauma with clinical signs of scaphoid injury (anatomic snuffbox tenderness, pain on axial loading of the thumb or reduced wrist motion). Fractures are most frequent in adolescents and young adults, but children and older adults should be imaged if suspected. If initial X‑rays are normal yet suspicion persists, immobilize and repeat imaging in 10–14 days or get MRI/CT.
