Position the patient supine or seated with the affected foot flat on the detector and the knee flexed. Rotate the foot medially about 30° (standard medial oblique) to profile the metatarsals, cuboid and tarsometatarsal joints. Center the x‑ray beam perpendicular to the receptor at the base of the third metatarsal. Collimate to the foot, remove artifacts, use shielding and a marker, and ask the patient to stay still.
