Common X-ray views for the temporomandibular joint include: panoramic (orthopantomogram), transcranial (lateral oblique) closed‑ and open‑mouth views, TMJ-specific open/closed mouth projections, submentovertex and AP axial (Towne) for condylar assessment, and transpharyngeal/basilar views for medial condylar evaluation. These plain radiographs are commonly used for initial evaluation; advanced imaging is used if needed.

The left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge and sliding joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull on the left side. It includes the mandibular condyle, articular disc, ligaments and muscles, allowing chewing, speaking and jaw movement. Dysfunction can cause pain, clicking, limited opening, and facial or ear discomfort, often treated conservatively.

Patient is seated or standing upright with the head in a true lateral position, the side being examined placed closest to the image receptor. The Frankfort plane is kept approximately parallel to the floor. Closed‑ and open‑mouth views are obtained to assess condylar position and function. Oblique/transcranial projections may require slight head rotation and specific tube angulation per local protocol.

Plain X-rays (panoramic/OPG) can show jaw bone structure, joint spacing and obvious degenerative changes or fractures, but they poorly visualize the TMJ’s soft tissues and disc. For detailed bone imaging, cone‑beam CT or CT are superior; MRI is the preferred test to assess the joint disc, inflammation, and soft tissues. Clinical exam guides which imaging is needed.

The best treatment for TMJ usually starts with conservative care: jaw rest, soft diet, heat/ice, gentle jaw exercises and physical therapy, short-term NSAIDs or acetaminophen for pain, occlusal splints/night guards, and stress-management. More invasive options—dental procedures, injections (steroids, hyaluronic acid, botulinum) or surgery—are reserved for persistent or structural problems after conservative measures fail.

Yes — stress can trigger or worsen TMJ (temporomandibular) problems. Stress often causes jaw clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism), increasing muscle tension, joint strain and pain.
