A standard hip X‑ray images the pelvis and the proximal femur — the upper thigh bone including the femoral head, neck and upper shaft — so it shows the top portion of the thigh. It does not image the whole thigh or lower femur. For mid or distal thigh concerns you’d need a dedicated femur/thigh X‑ray or other imaging. X‑rays show bones well; soft tissues less so.
