A lateral hip X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph showing the femoral head, neck, shaft and the acetabulum in profile. It helps identify fractures, dislocations, arthritis, joint‑space narrowing, impingement and assess hip prostheses. Obtained with specific positioning (e.g., cross‑table or frog‑leg lateral), it is a quick, low‑dose diagnostic test usually performed with an AP hip view.

A lateral view of the hip bone is a radiographic side projection that shows the hip joint in profile. The lateral hip is the outer side of the hip around the greater trochanter. It contains muscles (gluteus medius and minimus, tensor fasciae latae), tendons, bursae and nerves that help with hip abduction and pelvic stability. Pain here commonly arises from bursitis, gluteal tendinopathy or referred nerve pain. Examination and imaging guide treatment such as physiotherapy, pain relief and injections.

A lateral view on an X-ray is a side‑view image taken with the X‑ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other, perpendicular to the frontal (AP/PA) view. Used commonly for chest, spine, and joint evaluation; positioning may be left or right lateral.

A hip X‑ray itself is usually not painful. It’s a quick, non‑invasive scan with no needles; discomfort typically comes from moving or holding positions if your hip is already sore. Radiographers will help you position carefully and stop if pain is significant. The procedure takes minutes, requires no recovery, and any increased pain afterward is usually temporary—tell staff if you’re uncomfortable.
