X Ray Left Foot AP View

An AP (anteroposterior) foot X‑ray is a frontal radiograph taken with the foot flat on the detector and the X‑ray beam directed from front to back. It visualizes bones, joints, alignment, fractures, dislocations and degenerative changes. AP images are often combined with lateral and oblique views to fully assess injuries, foreign bodies, infection or arthritis, and to guide treatment planning.

AP view in X‑ray means anteroposterior projection: the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the patient onto the detector. It's commonly used for supine or portable exams when the patient can't stand. AP views can magnify anterior structures (e.g., heart) compared with PA views, so interpretation considers position and detector distance.

The best approach is a standard three-view foot X-ray: weight-bearing dorsoplantar (AP), lateral, and a 30° oblique. Weight-bearing images are preferred when assessing alignment, joint spaces, and subtle instabilities or arthritis. Non–weight-bearing views may be used for acute trauma if the patient cannot stand. Additional targeted projections or CT may follow for complex fractures.
