X Ray Left Femur Lat view

The standard X‑ray views of the femur are anteroposterior (AP) and lateral projections. Imaging should include the entire femur, capturing the hip and knee joints on at least one plate. For AP, the limb is slightly internally rotated to profile the femoral neck; for trauma, a cross‑table or true lateral view is obtained to assess shaft and joint alignment and detect fractures.

Lat view (lateral view) is an X-ray taken from the side to show body structures in profile. It complements frontal (AP/PA) images, helping assess bone alignment, joint spaces, fractures, air‑fluid levels and soft tissues without overlap. The patient stands or lies with the side of interest against the detector. Lateral views aid localization of lesions and improve diagnostic accuracy.

Lat on an X-ray stands for lateral, meaning the image was taken from the side. A lateral view shows structures in profile and is used alongside front/back (AP/PA) views to localize lesions, evaluate alignment, detect fluid or air levels, and assess bone or soft tissue relationships in spine, chest, skull, or joints. A femur X‑ray typically requires at least two orthogonal views — anteroposterior (AP) and lateral — to visualise fractures. For whole‑femur imaging, AP views that include the hip and knee plus a lateral of the affected segment are used. If a hip or proximal femur fracture is suspected, add an AP pelvis and a cross‑table lateral. CT may follow for complex or occult injuries.

Explain the procedure and remove metal. For a lateral femur, position the patient on the affected side (or use a cross‑table lateral if trauma prevents turning). Flex the knee about 45°, align the cassette to the femur’s long axis, and center the X‑ray beam on the mid‑shaft (include hip or knee with separate overlapping exposures for whole‑femur imaging). Immobilize, shield gonads, and instruct the patient to remain still during exposure.
