X Ray Left Femur AP view

Femur X‑ray typically includes AP (anteroposterior) and lateral views; trauma imaging uses two orthogonal projections. For the AP view, the patient lies supine with the limb extended and slightly internally rotated; a whole‑length (hip to knee) image is often obtained for shaft fractures. Lateral views are taken with the knee flexed to profile the femoral shaft and distal femur.

Patient supine on the table with the affected limb fully extended. Position the leg so the patella faces directly upward and the femoral epicondyles are parallel to the image receptor for a true AP. Center the central ray perpendicular to the mid‑distal femoral shaft, including the knee joint and about 5 to 10 cm of proximal femur. Collimate to the distal femur and use appropriate shielding.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from front to back through the body to a detector behind the patient; often used when patients can’t stand or for supine imaging and can slightly magnify structures like the heart. Lateral view: side‑to‑side projection at 90° to AP, showing depth and anterior–posterior relationships to localize lesions, fractures, or joint/spine findings.
