X Ray left elbow Joint Lateral view

A normal lateral elbow X-ray shows proper alignment of the distal humerus, proximal radius and ulna with the anterior humeral line passing through the middle third of the capitellum. Joint spaces are concentric, ossification centers age‑appropriate, no displaced fractures, and no posterior fat‑pad sign; only a small anterior fat pad may be present. Soft tissues appear unremarkable.

To obtain a perfect lateral elbow X-ray: seat the patient with the arm flexed 90°, forearm and humerus aligned in a true lateral (thumb pointing upward) so medial and lateral epicondyles are superimposed. Center the X-ray beam at the elbow joint, include distal humerus and proximal radius/ulna, immobilize to avoid motion, and use appropriate exposure settings. Confirm fat-pad visualization.

The left lateral position places the patient lying on their left side with the left side against the image receptor (left lateral decubitus). It’s used for chest and abdominal X‑rays to demonstrate air–fluid levels and small pleural effusions, and to minimize cardiac magnification on lateral views. Proper positioning and stillness ensure diagnostic image quality.

Standard elbow X‑rays include AP, lateral and often oblique views. For AP: patient seated or standing, arm extended (or elbow flexed 90° if painful), forearm supinated (palm up). For lateral: elbow flexed 90°, medial side against the detector, forearm neutral (thumb up). Oblique views use about 45° internal or external rotation to better show the coronoid and radial head.

A normal elbow X-ray shows well-aligned humerus, radius and ulna with preserved joint spaces, intact cortical and trabecular bone, and no fractures or dislocations. Soft tissues are unremarkable with no joint effusion (no visible posterior fat pad); a small anterior fat pad can be normal. Age-appropriate ossification centers and open growth plates are visible in children.

The lateral elbow is the outer side of the elbow joint, anchored by the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. It’s where wrist and finger extensor muscles and their tendons attach, and where the radial nerve passes nearby. Overuse or strain commonly causes lateral elbow pain (lateral epicondylitis or “tennis elbow”), producing tenderness, weakness with gripping, and pain on wrist extension.
