X Ray Hip AP View

An AP (anteroposterior) hip view is an X‑ray taken with the patient supine and the beam directed front-to-back through the pelvis and proximal femur. It visualizes the acetabulum, femoral heads and necks, and surrounding pelvis to assess fractures, dislocations, arthritis, implants and leg‑length discrepancy. Feet are usually internally rotated about 15° to better profile the femoral neck.

A 4‑view hip X‑ray is a series of four X‑ray images taken from different angles to fully evaluate the hip joints. Typical views include an anteroposterior (AP) pelvis, AP of the affected hip, a frog‑leg lateral and a cross‑table or false‑profile lateral. This series helps detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, joint‑space narrowing and bone lesions, guiding diagnosis and treatment planning.

Common hip X‑ray views include an AP pelvis (AP bilateral hips), an AP hip, a frog‑leg lateral (internal rotation lateral), and a cross‑table lateral (shoot‑through/Danelius‑Miller) for trauma. Additional specialized views are the false‑profile (Lequesne) for anterior acetabular coverage and Judet obliques for acetabular fractures. They assess joint space, fractures, degenerative change, and prosthesis position; AP pelvis is routine.

A pelvis AP X-ray (anteroposterior) is a plain radiograph taken with the beam traveling front-to-back, usually with the patient supine or upright. It images the pelvis, hips, sacrum and proximal femora to detect fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, infection and some tumors. It’s quick, widely available, uses low radiation, and may be supplemented by additional views or CT for detail.

An AP view is an anteroposterior radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body. It’s often used for chest, spine and trauma imaging when patients can’t stand. Compared with PA views it can magnify anterior structures (e.g., heart) and slightly alter measurements, so interpretation considers positioning limitations.

Apophysitis is inflammation or overuse injury of growth‑plate apophyses around the hip (e.g., anterior superior/inferior iliac spine, ischial tuberosity, or greater trochanter) in adolescents and young athletes. It causes activity‑related localized pain, tenderness, and limited movement. Management is conservative: rest, activity modification, ice, physiotherapy, and NSAIDs; imaging or surgery is rare for persistent cases.
