X RAY FINGER LATERAL VIEW

For a lateral finger X‑ray, place the finger on its side so the palmar surface is vertical and the phalanges are in true lateral (proximal and distal phalanges superimposed). Flex adjacent fingers into a fist or move them out of the beam, support the finger on a sponge, and center the beam perpendicular to the PIP joint. Collimate from distal phalanx to the MCP joint.

Typically a finger X-ray is done in three views — PA (or AP), oblique and lateral — to reliably detect fractures, joint dislocations and alignment. Two views may be used for very clear cases, while additional targeted views can be requested for complex injuries or surgical planning. Your clinician will decide based on the injury location, symptoms and clinical suspicion.

In standard anatomical position (palms facing forward), the lateral side of the hand is the radial (thumb) side. Therefore the thumb is the most lateral digit; the index finger is the next most lateral. All other fingers (middle, ring, little) are progressively more medial, with the little finger being the most medial.

The lateral projection of the fingers is an X‑ray view taken with the finger positioned true lateral (resting on its radial or ulnar side) and slightly flexed to profile the phalanges. The central ray is centered at the PIP joint. This view demonstrates anterior–posterior alignment, displacement, fracture fragments and soft‑tissue swelling, and complements PA and oblique views for trauma or joint assessment.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing an image that shows depth and anterior–posterior relationships of structures. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views to localize lesions, assess bone alignment, and evaluate the chest, spine, joints and soft tissues, revealing abnormalities hidden on frontal images.

The lateral approach to the finger is a surgical or injection route made along the radial or ulnar side of a digit. An incision beside the finger provides access to phalangeal bone, joint and tendon structures while allowing direct visualization and protection of the volar neurovascular bundle. It is commonly used for fracture fixation, tendon or joint procedures, and digital blocks, taking care to identify and protect digital nerves and arteries.
