X Ray Both Index Finger Lateral View

The lateral finger X‑ray is obtained with the affected digit placed true lateral—nail beds perpendicular to the image receptor so the phalanges are superimposed. Position the finger with adjacent digits flexed or taped out of the way, include the distal phalanx through the base of the metacarpal, and center the central ray at the PIP joint. Collimate tightly to the finger to reduce dose.

"Lateral to the index finger" means toward the thumb (radial) side of the hand — the outer edge of the index finger away from the body’s midline. It denotes a position on or toward the finger’s thumb-facing margin rather than the medial (ulnar) side. Clinicians use this term to describe wounds, sensations, pulses, or anatomical landmarks on that side.

Typically a finger X‑ray uses three views: PA (or AP), oblique, and lateral. Three projections provide accurate assessment of bone alignment, joint spaces, and subtle fractures; two views may be used for straightforward injuries but can miss pathology. Additional or specialized views (e.g., stress or comparison views) are taken when needed based on clinical concern.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑to‑side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image perpendicular to the frontal (AP/PA) view. It provides depth information, clarifies structures overlapped on frontal images, and is commonly used for chest, spine, skull, and limb imaging to assess alignment, collapse, effusions, or foreign bodies.

The lateral position is when a person lies on their side, supported by pillows between knees and under the head to keep the spine aligned. It includes left and right side-lying and is used to improve breathing, lower aspiration risk, relieve pressure on the back or surgical sites, and increase comfort during hospital care, recovery, or labor. Caregivers adjust alignment to prevent pressure injuries.

A lateral X‑ray is a side view, not intrinsically left or right. It may be specified as left lateral or right lateral depending on which side of the patient is placed against the image receptor. Radiology practice uses radiopaque side markers to document which side is closest to the detector, so the image alone without a marker does not reliably indicate left versus right.
