X Ray Both Hands Oblique View

An oblique hand X‑ray provides an angled view to better visualize bones and joints of the hand and wrist, reducing overlap seen on AP or lateral views. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, joint space narrowing, bone erosions, foreign bodies and alignment abnormalities in phalanges, metacarpals and carpal bones. It's commonly used with AP and lateral images for full assessment.

An oblique view in X‑ray is an angled projection taken with the patient or X‑ray beam rotated between frontal (AP/PA) and lateral positions. It separates overlapping structures to better show bones, joints, ribs, spine segments, and subtle fractures or dislocations. Variants include anterior/posterior and left/right oblique projections, chosen to optimally profile the area of concern while minimizing superimposition.

Position the patient at a 45° rotation (standing, sitting, or supine as appropriate) so the area of interest is oblique to the image receptor. Center the anatomy and align the central ray perpendicular to the detector. Collimate tightly, place lead shielding and a side marker, set exposure factors, and ask the patient to hold still (or breath-hold for chest/abdomen). Verify positioning on the image and repeat if needed.

The hand oblique radiographic view is obtained with the hand rotated approximately 45 degrees from the PA (palm-down) position. This obliquity spreads the digits and reduces overlap, improving visualization of metacarpals, phalanges, joint spaces, and fractures. Technicians may adjust the angle (commonly 30–60 degrees) for specific anatomy or patient comfort.
