Yes. Ultrasound can image the tongue using intraoral or submental approaches to assess anatomy, mobility, lesions, masses, and swallowing function. It is safe, noninvasive, radiation-free, and useful in clinics and speech/swallow assessments. Limitations include reduced penetration around air and bone and limited visualization of deep tongue‑base lesions; CT or MRI may be needed for complex or deep pathology.

Clinicians scan the tongue by visual inspection and high‑resolution photography using intraoral cameras or smartphone images. Special light techniques (narrow‑band imaging, autofluorescence) can highlight abnormal tissue. For deeper or suspicious lesions they use imaging (CT/MRI) and endoscopy, and confirm diagnosis by biopsy. Some apps use AI to analyze photos, but these support—not replace—clinical assessment.

An oral (intraoral) ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the mouth’s soft tissues — tongue, floor of mouth, salivary glands, lesions and nearby lymph nodes. It’s a quick, painless, non‑radiation scan used to detect tumors, infections, stones, or guide biopsies and drainage. Doppler can assess blood flow. A small probe is placed inside or outside the mouth.

For persistent pain, sores, lumps, or changes in color or taste you may be referred to an ENT (otolaryngologist), oral medicine specialist, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Neurologists assess nerve-related taste or movement issues, and dermatologists manage mucosal disorders. Seek prompt professional assessment for persistent or worsening symptoms.

Yes—neck ultrasound can visualize many throat-related soft tissues such as the thyroid, salivary glands, lymph nodes and superficial masses. It detects nodules, cysts, abscesses and guides biopsies. Limitations include poor imaging of air-filled structures and deeper areas behind bone or cartilage, so laryngoscopy, CT or MRI may be needed for vocal cord function or complex pharyngeal/laryngeal disease.
