Ultrasound Right Ankle

An ankle ultrasound visualizes soft tissues around the joint: tendons (Achilles, peroneal, tibialis), ligaments, bursae, and the joint capsule. It can detect tendon tears or inflammation, tendon subluxation, ligament sprains, joint effusion, synovitis, cysts, and foreign bodies, and assess blood flow with Doppler for inflammation. It’s less useful for detecting bone fractures or deep cartilage damage.

To prepare for an ankle ultrasound, wear loose, easily removed clothing and remove jewelry. Clean the skin—avoid lotions or creams on the ankle. Bring referral paperwork, prior imaging, and a list of medications and symptoms. Expect to expose and move the ankle; the exam is painless though you may feel pressure. No fasting or special medication changes are usually required—confirm with your clinic.

Ultrasound is useful diagnostically for ankle injuries—sonography can detect tendon tears, ligament damage and effusions—but therapeutic ultrasound (deep‑heat treatment) has limited, inconsistent evidence for speeding recovery after acute sprains. It may provide short‑term pain relief for some chronic soft‑tissue problems, but active rehabilitation, manual therapy and exercise remain the primary, evidence‑based treatments.

An ankle ultrasound usually takes about 15–30 minutes. The scan itself often lasts 10–20 minutes, but appointment time can be 30–45 minutes including preparation, positioning and reviewing images. Complex cases or Doppler assessment may take a bit longer. Results may be discussed immediately or sent later, depending on the facility. Bring any referral or previous imaging with you.

Doctors check ankles to assess circulation, fluid retention and nerve or vein problems. Swelling can indicate heart, kidney or liver disease, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, or medication side effects. Examination looks for pitting edema, skin changes, temperature and pulses and tests like the Achilles reflex to evaluate peripheral neuropathy and neurological function. Findings guide diagnosis and further tests.

Ultrasound can detect many ligament injuries, especially superficial or peripheral ligaments (e.g., ankle, wrist), showing fiber discontinuity, partial tears, and surrounding fluid. It allows dynamic assessment and guided procedures but is operator-dependent and less reliable for deep or intra‑articular ligaments (like the ACL). For complex, deep, or intra‑articular injuries, MRI is generally the preferred imaging test.
