A urologist orders ultrasound to image the kidneys, bladder, prostate and testes noninvasively. It detects stones, tumors, cysts, hydronephrosis, urinary retention and structural abnormalities, measures post-void residual volume, assesses blood flow with Doppler, and guides procedures such as biopsies or catheter placement. Ultrasound is safe, quick and helps diagnose pain, infection, hematuria, infertility or urinary obstruction and monitor treatment response.

Low-intensity acoustic shockwave or therapeutic ultrasound can improve penile blood flow and erectile function in some men with vascular erectile dysfunction, giving modest and sometimes temporary benefits with few side effects. Evidence is promising but limited and inconsistent, and the treatment is not standard practice everywhere. Yes—ultrasound is a first-line, noninvasive test that can detect many urinary tract problems: kidney size and cysts, hydronephrosis (urine blockage), large kidney stones, bladder wall abnormalities, post-void residual volume and masses. It’s less sensitive for small ureteric stones, early infection or reflux, and functional issues; further tests (CT, cystoscopy, urodynamics) may be needed for definitive diagnosis.

Prostate ultrasound is usually not painful. Transabdominal ultrasound is painless. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) may cause pressure, rectal discomfort or mild cramping; most men find it uncomfortable rather than painful. If a biopsy is taken, local anaesthetic is often used to reduce pain. Temporary side effects can include mild bleeding, soreness or urinary irritation; serious complications are uncommon.

Permanent cure depends on the cause. Treat underlying conditions (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol), adopt healthy lifestyle changes (weight loss, regular exercise, stop smoking, limit alcohol), review medications, and seek psychological therapy for stress or relationship issues. Color duplex (penile) Doppler ultrasound with intracavernosal vasodilator injection is the preferred imaging test for erectile dysfunction. It evaluates arterial inflow, peak systolic velocity, and veno‑occlusive function to detect arterial insufficiency or venous leak. MRI is rarely used and reserved for suspected pelvic, structural, or neurologic causes. Duplex ultrasound is noninvasive and guides diagnosis and treatment planning.
