An MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues. It’s non-invasive, radiation-free and often painless. Clinicians use it to diagnose tears, inflammation, bursitis, tendon problems and guide injections or aspirations. Doppler can show increased blood flow. Exams are usually outpatient and may include dynamic movement to assess structures.

MSK stands for musculoskeletal. MSK ultrasound refers to high-resolution sonography of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bursae and peripheral nerves. It’s used to diagnose sprains, tears, inflammation, arthritis, cysts and tendonopathies, and to guide joint or soft-tissue injections and aspirations. It’s noninvasive, real-time, and allows dynamic assessment of movement and compressibility of soft-tissue structures.

An ultrasound is a general imaging technique using sound waves to view internal organs (abdomen, pelvis, pregnancy) with probe frequency chosen for depth. An MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound specifically images muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and peripheral nerves, uses higher-frequency probes for superior superficial detail, allows dynamic assessment and procedure guidance, and is done by clinicians trained in MSK anatomy.

A hand ultrasound visualizes soft tissues—tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves and joint linings—showing fluid collections, cysts, ganglions, tendon tears or tenosynovitis, synovitis and erosions on bone surfaces. Doppler assesses blood flow to detect inflammation. It detects foreign bodies, guides needle injections and assesses dynamic movement and impingement. It does not image deep bone marrow well; X-ray/CT/MRI may be needed for deeper bony detail.

No — MSK and MRI are not the same. MSK refers to the musculoskeletal system or specialty covering bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is an imaging technique. An MSK MRI is simply an MRI exam focused on musculoskeletal structures to evaluate injuries, inflammation, or disease. So MSK describes the body area; MRI is the testing method.
