Ultrasound Left Wrist

A wrist ultrasound images soft tissues in real time: tendons and tendon sheaths (tears, tenosynovitis), ligaments, the median nerve for carpal tunnel, joint fluid and synovitis, ganglion cysts and soft-tissue masses. Doppler assesses increased blood flow from inflammation. It can suggest cortical bone irregularities but is limited for fractures or deep bone disease; X-ray or MRI may be needed.

An ultrasound of the wrist checks soft tissues—tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints—to diagnose tendon tears, tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts, inflammation, fluid collections or masses, and to assess nerve compression like carpal tunnel. It provides real-time, dynamic imaging without radiation, can detect occult injuries or foreign bodies, and helps guide injections or treatment decisions. The test is quick, painless and noninvasive.

The left wrist contains the radial artery, a primary site to palpate the radial pulse to assess heart rate, rhythm and peripheral perfusion. Clinically it’s used for arterial lines, blood pressure checks and assessing circulation after trauma or fractures. It’s also a common site for carpal tunnel, tendon injuries and inflammation, which can directly affect hand function and sensation.

Ultrasound image sides depend on probe orientation: the left side of the screen corresponds to the probe‑marker side. In transverse (axial) scans the left of the image usually represents the patient's right. In longitudinal/sagittal scans the left of the image usually corresponds to the patient's head (cephalad) and the right to the feet (caudal). Always confirm the probe marker.

Costs vary widely by country and setting. In the US, outpatient wrist (musculoskeletal) ultrasound typically runs about $100–$600. In the UK private scans cost roughly £50–£200, while NHS patients usually receive it without charge. In India, prices are commonly ₹700–₹2,500. Final price depends on facility, whether it’s Doppler or guided, and any radiologist fees—check locally.

Ultrasound has limited ability to assess bone: it visualizes bone surfaces and nearby soft tissues but cannot image internal bone marrow. It can detect cortical irregularities, some fractures—especially in children—joint effusions, periosteal reactions or adjacent abscesses, and guide procedures. For intraosseous lesions, complex fractures or marrow disease, X‑ray, CT or MRI are more accurate.
