ULTRASOUND LEFT THIGH

A thigh ultrasound visualizes soft tissues — muscles, tendons, ligaments and subcutaneous fat — and nearby blood vessels. It detects muscle tears, tendon injuries, hematomas, abscesses, cysts, tumors and foreign bodies. Duplex or Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow and can diagnose deep vein thrombosis. It guides needle aspirations or injections and helps monitor healing without radiation.

On ultrasound the left side of the image corresponds to the transducer marker. Which patient side that represents depends on probe orientation: in transverse scans (marker toward the patient’s right) the image left equals the patient’s right; in longitudinal/sagittal scans (marker toward the head) the image left equals the patient’s cephalad (head) side. Always confirm the probe marker.

Yes. Musculoskeletal ultrasound can detect many muscle problems — tears, strains, hematomas, inflammation, abscesses, atrophy, and calcifications — and allows real‑time, dynamic assessment and guided procedures. It’s operator‑dependent and less effective for deep muscles, diffuse myopathies, or when bone blocks views. MRI, EMG, or biopsy may be needed for detailed or systemic muscle disease evaluation.

Ultrasound can detect pregnancy and fetal growth, ectopic pregnancy, placental problems, and fetal anomalies; abdominal conditions like gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones, cysts and tumors; pelvic issues such as ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids; thyroid and breast lumps; heart structure/function (echocardiography); vascular problems like deep vein thrombosis; and soft‑tissue or joint injuries. It’s noninvasive and provides real‑time imaging.

Yes. Ultrasound can detect many soft‑tissue tumors in the leg, especially superficial masses, and can distinguish solid from cystic lesions and assess vascularity with Doppler. It’s useful for initial evaluation and guiding biopsy. However, it may miss deep, bone‑related, or complex masses; MRI is usually required for full extent, characterization, and surgical planning.

An ultrasound of the legs checks blood flow and vein health to detect blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), venous insufficiency, varicose veins, or arterial narrowing. It’s ordered for symptoms like swelling, pain, redness, warmth, or unexplained leg heaviness, and to plan or monitor treatment. The scan is noninvasive, painless, uses sound waves, and helps prevent complications such as pulmonary embolism.
