ULTRASOUND CERVICAL REGION

A cervical ultrasound (transvaginal or transabdominal) images the cervix’s size, shape and internal canal. It measures cervical length and detects shortening or funneling (risk of preterm birth), visualizes polyps, nabothian cysts, fibroids, masses or structural abnormalities, and can show dilation in labor. Doppler assesses blood flow; biopsy is needed to diagnose cancer.

A cervical ultrasound (usually transvaginal) is quick. The scan itself typically takes 10–20 minutes. Expect 20–45 minutes for the whole appointment to include preparation, positioning, measurements and a short explanation of findings. If additional imaging or complex assessment is required, the visit may run longer. The procedure is outpatient, with minimal discomfort and no recovery time.

Follow clinic instructions: for a transabdominal cervical ultrasound, arrive with a full bladder (drink about 500–1,000 mL water 1 hour before and do not urinate) to improve visualization. For a transvaginal scan, you’ll usually be asked to empty your bladder. Wear loose two-piece clothing, remove pelvic jewelry, bring previous reports, and inform staff about bleeding, infection, or pregnancy.

Yes. Ultrasound—especially transvaginal ultrasound—can visualize the cervix clearly, allowing assessment of cervical length, funneling, and some structural abnormalities. Transabdominal scans may show the cervix but with less detail. Ultrasound can suggest cervical masses or suspicious changes, but definitive diagnosis of lesions usually requires speculum exam, colposcopy, or biopsy. It’s commonly used in pregnancy to monitor preterm birth risk.

Ultrasound—especially transvaginal—can detect cervical masses and help assess size, extension, and blood flow, but it isn’t sensitive for early or pre‑invasive lesions. A suspicious ultrasound prompts colposcopy and biopsy for definitive diagnosis. MRI is preferred for detailed local staging. Ultrasound is useful in symptomatic patients or when evaluating suspected spread to nearby organs.

For a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound, drink about 1–1.5 L (4–6 cups) of plain water roughly one hour before your appointment. Finish drinking 45–60 minutes beforehand and do not urinate until after the scan so your bladder is comfortably full. Avoid diuretics (coffee/alcohol) and carbonated drinks. Follow any specific instructions from your clinic, as requirements can vary.
