Ultrasound Breast Single

Ultrasound can detect many breast abnormalities—especially distinguishing cysts from solid masses and improving evaluation in dense breasts—but it cannot reliably detect all cancers. It may miss small tumors or microcalcifications best seen on mammography. Ultrasound is an important adjunct to clinical exam and mammography; a tissue biopsy is required for definitive cancer diagnosis.

Breast ultrasound costs vary by country and provider. In the US it often ranges about $150–$600 (commonly $200–$400); in the UK it’s free under public healthcare but private scans typically cost £100–£300. In India prices are roughly ₹500–₹3,000. Final price depends on facility, location, added tests, and whether insurance covers imaging or referral.

A unilateral breast ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test using sound waves to examine one breast. It assesses lumps, pain, nipple changes, or an abnormal mammogram, helps distinguish cysts from solid masses, and can guide needle biopsies. It involves no radiation, provides real-time images, and is often preferred for younger or pregnant women to guide further investigation or treatment.

A normal breast ultrasound shows homogeneous breast tissue with no solid masses or suspicious lesions. Simple cysts, if present, appear anechoic with thin walls and posterior enhancement and are considered benign. Ducts and surrounding tissues look unremarkable, and axillary lymph nodes retain a normal fatty hilum. No abnormal vascularity, irregular margins, or other features suggestive of malignancy are seen.

Early breast cancer may cause a new, often painless lump or thickening in the breast or armpit, change in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, and nipple changes such as inversion or unusual discharge (possibly bloody). Other signs include persistent breast or nipple pain, redness, scaling or crusting of breast or nipple skin, and swollen lymph nodes under the arm.

On ultrasound, breast cancer usually appears as a solid, hypoechoic (darker) mass with irregular, spiculated or angular margins, often taller-than-wide (nonparallel) in orientation. It may show posterior acoustic shadowing, heterogeneous internal echoes, increased internal vascularity on Doppler, and associated architectural distortion, skin thickening, or suspicious axillary lymph nodes. These features typically prompt biopsy.
