Foot ultrasound visualizes soft tissues and superficial joints. It detects tendon injuries (tendinitis, partial/full tears), plantar fascia problems (plantar fasciitis), ligament sprains, bursitis, ganglion cysts, Morton's neuroma, fluid collections, foreign bodies and joint effusions. Doppler shows increased blood flow from inflammation. It’s useful for dynamic assessment and guiding injections but is limited for deep bone fractures compared with X‑ray or CT.

A foot ultrasound typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes to perform. Preparation is minimal — you’ll remove shoes and socks and expose the area. The scan is painless and usually done in a clinic or radiology department; time can be shorter or longer depending on complexity, use of Doppler, and number of regions examined. Results may be explained immediately or provided later.

To prepare for a foot ultrasound, wear loose, easily removable clothing and shoes so the foot is accessible. Remove jewelry and avoid applying lotions or creams to the area. Bring referrals, prior imaging and a list of medications and symptoms. No fasting or special diet is usually required unless instructed. Arrive a bit early and be prepared to move your foot during the scan.

Yes. High-resolution ultrasound can often visualize peripheral nerves in the foot, detect neuromas, swelling, compression, discontinuity, and nearby lesions, and guide injections or aspirations. It provides dynamic, real-time imaging but cannot assess nerve electrical function (EMG/NCS required). Its accuracy is operator-dependent, and MRI may be preferable for deep or complex cases.
