Ultrasound Both Axilla

An axilla ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize tissues in the armpit (axilla). It evaluates lumps, swollen or abnormal lymph nodes, infections, cysts, or soft-tissue masses and can guide needle biopsy or aspiration. The exam is quick, painless, and performed by a sonographer; results help diagnose infection, inflammation, benign conditions, or suspicious findings needing further testing.

Breast cancer usually begins in breast ducts or lobules, but it can present in the axilla. Sometimes cancer is first detected as metastatic disease in axillary lymph nodes with no visible breast tumor, or it can originate in accessory (axillary) breast tissue that extends into the armpit. Any suspicious axillary lump requires prompt evaluation with clinical exam, imaging and biopsy.

Ultrasound can detect abnormal axillary masses and lymph nodes and show features suggestive of cancer (solid mass, cortical thickening, loss of fatty hilum, increased blood flow). However, it cannot definitively diagnose cancer—imaging raises suspicion; tissue sampling (fine-needle aspiration or core biopsy) is needed for confirmation. Ultrasound also helps guide biopsies and monitor changes over time.

To prepare for an axillary ultrasound, wear loose clothing or a two-piece outfit so the armpit is accessible. Avoid deodorant, antiperspirant, powders or lotions on the underarm the day of the scan. Bring prior imaging and a brief medical history (surgeries, implants, symptoms). No fasting or special medications are usually required; follow any clinic-specific instructions.
