Ultrasound Both Ankle

An ankle ultrasound visualizes soft tissues around the joint: tendons (including the Achilles), ligaments, muscles, bursae and joint lining. It detects tendon tears or inflammation, ligament sprains, joint effusion, cysts, foreign bodies and superficial cartilage or bone-surface irregularities. Doppler can show increased blood flow from inflammation. It’s useful for dynamic assessment and guiding injections or aspirations, but not for deep bone marrow injury.

An ankle ultrasound itself usually takes 10–20 minutes, with total appointment time (check-in, positioning and brief explanation) generally 15–30 minutes. Studies needing dynamic assessment, comparison to the other ankle, or detailed evaluation of complex injuries may take a bit longer. The test is quick and non‑invasive; preliminary findings are often available immediately, with a formal report following later.

To prepare for an ankle ultrasound: wear loose, comfortable clothing or shorts so the ankle is easily exposed; remove jewelry and any dressings. Bring your referral, ID and any prior imaging. No fasting is usually required; continue medications unless told otherwise. Tell the sonographer if you’re pregnant or have allergies. Arrive a little early to complete paperwork and follow facility-specific instructions.
