Ultrasound Ankle

An ankle ultrasound visualizes soft tissues around the joint — tendons (including Achilles and peroneal), ligaments, bursae and joint lining — and detects tendon tears, tendinopathy, bursitis, joint effusions, synovitis, cysts, foreign bodies and superficial bone-surface irregularities. It offers real-time dynamic assessment and Doppler blood-flow imaging to identify inflammation, and guides aspiration, injections, diagnosis and monitoring of injuries or inflammatory conditions.

An ankle ultrasound is a quick, noninvasive scan that typically takes about 15–30 minutes. The sonographer records static and dynamic views and may compare both ankles; allowing for history and setup it can extend to about 45 minutes if complex. There’s no recovery time and you can usually resume normal activities immediately. No special preparation or anesthesia is required.

A doctor orders a foot ultrasound to evaluate soft-tissue problems—tendon tears or inflammation (Achilles, plantar fascia), ligament injuries, bursitis, cysts or neuromas, and foreign bodies. It detects fluid collections or abscesses, assesses blood flow, and guides injections or aspirations. Ultrasound provides real-time, dynamic imaging to help diagnose masses, enthesopathy, swelling, or suspected infection without radiation exposure.

For an ankle ultrasound, wear loose clothing or shorts so the ankle is easily accessible and remove jewelry and bandages. Avoid creams, oils, or lotions on the area. Bring any prior imaging and a list of symptoms/medications. No fasting is required. Expect gel on the skin and gentle movement of the ankle during the scan; you may need to change into a gown and then resume normal activities.

Ultrasound is a good, safe tool for evaluating ankle soft‑tissue injuries—ligaments, tendons, muscles and joint effusions—and allows real‑time, dynamic assessment and procedure guidance. It’s limited for diagnosing fractures or deep bone pathology, and accuracy depends on operator skill. Clinicians often use ultrasound alongside X‑rays or MRI based on suspected injury and severity; follow medical advice for appropriate imaging.

Doctors examine your ankles to check for swelling (pitting edema) that can indicate heart, kidney, or liver problems; assess circulation by feeling pulses to detect peripheral artery disease or deep vein thrombosis; look for skin changes, redness or warmth suggesting infection or venous insufficiency; and test joint movement and ankle reflexes to identify arthritis, injury, or nerve damage.
