STREPTOCOCAL ANTIGEN TEST

Streptococcal antigen refers to specific proteins or carbohydrate molecules on Streptococcus bacteria (commonly Group A) that trigger an immune response and are targeted by rapid diagnostic tests. Detection in a throat swab indicates presence of Streptococcus causing strep throat; rapid antigen tests give quick results but are less sensitive than culture, so negative results with strong clinical suspicion may need confirmatory testing.

A streptococcal test detects infection with Streptococcus bacteria, commonly Group A, using a throat swab. Rapid antigen tests give results in minutes but are less sensitive; a throat culture is more accurate but takes 24 to 48 hours. Tests guide antibiotic treatment for strep throat and complications. Blood antibody tests (eg, ASO) can indicate past infection.

A positive Streptococcus test means Group A Streptococcus bacteria were detected in your sample, making strep throat or another strep infection likely. It usually indicates you may need antibiotics to treat the infection and reduce complications (like abscess or rheumatic fever) and to limit spread. Clinical symptoms and sometimes a confirmatory culture guide final treatment; follow your healthcare provider’s advice.

The strep "antigen" test is usually a rapid throat swab (RADT). There is no routine blood antigen test; instead blood tests detect antibodies to Group A Streptococcus, mainly the antistreptolysin O (ASO) titer and anti‑DNase B. These antibody tests indicate recent or past infection and help diagnose complications (rheumatic fever, post‑streptococcal glomerulonephritis), not acute throat infection.

An elevated anti-streptolysin O (ASO) titer indicates recent or past streptococcal infection but isn’t automatically dangerous. Its significance depends on symptoms and timing: it helps confirm prior strep exposure when complications like rheumatic fever or post‑streptococcal glomerulonephritis are suspected. Alone, ASO positivity often needs no treatment; discuss results with your clinician who may repeat testing or recommend further evaluation.

Confirming a Streptococcus infection requires clinical evaluation plus laboratory tests. A throat swab for rapid antigen detection gives quick results; a throat culture or PCR is more sensitive and is the definitive test.
