A spot (random) blood-glucose under about 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is generally considered normal for people without diabetes. Fasting normal values are roughly 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L). For people with diabetes, typical self‑monitoring targets are 80–130 mg/dL before meals and under 180 mg/dL two hours after starting a meal. Individual targets may vary; discuss with your clinician.

A spot sugar test (random blood glucose) measures blood glucose at a single moment, regardless of the last meal. It’s done by a fingerstick glucometer or lab sample to screen or monitor glucose control. To pass a pregnancy glucose test, follow the test-specific instructions: 1-hour 50 g screening usually needs no fasting; 2-hour 75 g OGTT requires 8–14 hours fasting. Avoid high-carb meals the night before, skip caffeine and smoking, stay hydrated, and take regular medications only as advised by your clinician. Drink the glucose solution quickly, remain seated, and tell staff if you vomit or feel unwell.

Five common signs your blood sugar is too high are increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, persistent fatigue or weakness, and slow wound healing or frequent infections. Other symptoms can include dry mouth, headaches, or unexplained weight loss. If you notice these signs, check your blood glucose and consult a healthcare professional promptly.

You can check glucose without finger‑pricks using continuous or flash glucose monitors — a small sensor applied to the skin measures interstitial glucose and is read with a reader or smartphone. They provide real‑time levels and trends but have a short lag versus blood glucose and may be less accurate during rapid changes. Confirm with a finger‑prick if readings don’t match symptoms or before dosing insulin.
