Sickle Cell Test

A test for sickle cell typically uses a blood sample to detect abnormal hemoglobin S. Newborn and diagnostic testing commonly employ hemoglobin electrophoresis or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); a sickle solubility test and peripheral blood smear can support diagnosis. Genetic (DNA) testing of the HBB gene confirms diagnosis or carrier status, and prenatal testing is available for at-risk pregnancies.

The two primary confirmatory tests for sickle cell anemia are hemoglobin electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Both detect and quantify hemoglobin S and other abnormal hemoglobin variants to confirm a diagnosis. When results are equivocal or for definitive mutation identification, targeted DNA molecular testing of the HBB gene may be used as an additional confirmatory method.

A positive sickle cell test means you either carry the sickle gene (trait) or have sickle cell disease; confirmatory testing and genetic counseling follow. Carriers are usually healthy but should inform partners and consider reproductive testing. People with disease need specialist care: vaccinations, infant penicillin, pain‑crisis management, hydroxyurea or transfusions, routine monitoring, pregnancy planning, and emergency treatment for complications.

Another name for a sickle cell test is hemoglobin electrophoresis, often called a hemoglobin S test or sickle cell screening. This laboratory test identifies abnormal hemoglobin variants—especially hemoglobin S—and helps distinguish sickle cell trait from sickle cell disease. A simpler screening method is the sickle cell solubility (SickleDex) test, but electrophoresis is the confirmatory diagnostic test.

Sickle cell can be detected prenatally by genetic testing — chorionic villus sampling at about 10–13 weeks or amniocentesis at about 15–20 weeks — or by parental carrier testing. Newborn screening (heel‑prick) reliably identifies abnormal hemoglobins at 24–72 hours of life. Symptoms often don’t appear until fetal hemoglobin declines, typically around 4–6 months of age.

Costs vary widely. In public programs (for example newborn or national screening) the sickle cell test is usually free. Private lab prices: in the US expect roughly $50–$400 for hemoglobin electrophoresis or sickle cell testing; in India roughly ₹300–₹2,000. Insurance often covers diagnostic testing. Ask your clinic or lab for an exact price and whether insurance or public screening applies.
