Perimetry Test

Perimetry (visual field) testing maps central and peripheral vision to detect blind spots, scotomas, and field loss from glaucoma, optic nerve disease, retinal conditions, or brain lesions. The automated test presents lights while you fixate on a central target and press a button when seen. Results quantify field defects, guide diagnosis, track progression, and help plan treatment or surgery.

Perimetry is the visual field test that maps a person’s peripheral and central vision to detect blind spots or field defects. It evaluates how well the eyes and optic pathways respond to stimuli across the visual field—commonly performed as automated perimetry (e.g., Humphrey) or manual confrontation testing—to diagnose and monitor glaucoma, optic nerve disease, retinal conditions, and neurological lesions.

Perimetry is performed in two main ways: static and kinetic. Static perimetry tests fixed visual field locations by varying light intensity to determine sensitivity thresholds. Kinetic perimetry maps visual field boundaries using moving targets brought from the periphery toward fixation. Both methods detect visual field defects from glaucoma, retinal disease, or neurological lesions and are chosen by clinical need and patient ability.

Perimetry (visual field) costs vary by country and setting. In India private clinics typically charge about ₹300–1,500. In the United States out‑of‑pocket fees commonly range roughly $50–$250, though insurance or Medicare often covers it. In the United Kingdom it’s usually provided free through the NHS for eligible patients. Hospital or specialist charges may be higher.

If you fail a perimetry (visual field) test, it suggests a possible visual field defect or an unreliable result. Your clinician will usually repeat the test, check reliability (fixation, learning, fatigue), perform a full eye and possibly neurological exam, and order imaging if needed. Diagnosis guides treatment—e.g., glaucoma care, neurologic referral, monitoring, or vision rehabilitation. Driving or work limits may follow until confirmed.

Before a perimetry (visual field) test, bring your glasses/contacts and a list of medications. Don’t wear eye makeup. You may get drops to dilate pupils—if so, arrange someone to drive you and expect light sensitivity. Be well rested, avoid sedating alcohol/medicines, and follow the technician’s instructions: keep your head still, fixate on the target, and press the button when you see lights.
