A thoracolumbar spine MRI is a noninvasive scan of the thoracic and lumbar regions that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots and surrounding soft tissues. It helps diagnose causes of back pain, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, infection, inflammation or tumours. The test uses no ionising radiation and may use contrast for clearer images.
