MRI Scan Testis

A scrotal (testicular) ultrasound with color Doppler is the best initial scan for testis evaluation. It’s non‑invasive, radiation‑free, and accurately detects masses, inflammation, hydrocele, varicocele, and assesses blood flow to diagnose torsion. MRI or CT are reserved for inconclusive ultrasound, staging of malignancy, or complex anatomy. It provides rapid bedside assessment and guides urgent management decisions.

Yes, MRI can visualize testicular tumors and is useful when ultrasound is inconclusive. Ultrasound remains the first-line test for suspected testicular cancer, but MRI can better characterize indeterminate intratesticular lesions, define local extent, and guide surgical planning. It is not routinely required for all cases; additional imaging such as CT is typically used for staging.

MRI does not use ionizing radiation and is not shown to damage sperm or reduce male fertility. Diagnostic MRI’s magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy produce minimal heating; routine scans have not demonstrated harmful effects on sperm parameters. Extremely prolonged, high‑field, or specialized MR procedures involving the testes are theoretical risks—discuss specific concerns or upcoming fertility plans with your radiologist or physician.

Five warning signs of testicular cancer: a painless lump or nodule on a testicle; change in size, shape or firmness of a testicle; a dull ache or sharp pain in the testicle, scrotum, or lower abdomen; a feeling of heaviness or dragging in the scrotum; and breast enlargement or tenderness (hormone-related). To check your testes, warm shower relaxes the scrotum. Use both hands: roll each testicle gently between thumb and fingers, feeling for size, shape and smooth, firm but not hard tissue. Note the soft, tube-like epididymis at the back. Compare sides and look for lumps, hard spots, sudden size change, persistent swelling, pain or heaviness. See a doctor promptly if anything is unusual.
