MRI Scan Neurogram

An MRI neurogram (MR neurography) is a specialized MRI technique that produces high-resolution images of peripheral nerves and surrounding tissues. It uses nerve-sensitive sequences and fat suppression to show nerve anatomy and signal changes, helping detect inflammation, compression, entrapment, trauma, or tumors. It’s noninvasive, radiation-free, and aids diagnosis, surgical planning, and monitoring of nerve disorders.

A neuro MRI produces high-resolution images of the brain, spinal cord and surrounding soft tissues and blood vessels. It detects tumors, stroke and bleeding, inflammation or infection, demyelinating diseases (like multiple sclerosis), degenerative or traumatic injury, congenital malformations and vascular problems (aneurysms, stenosis). With contrast or MR angiography it highlights active lesions and blood-flow abnormalities to guide diagnosis and treatment planning.

MRI can detect many forms of nerve damage by visualizing structural problems—nerve compression, inflammation, tumors, demyelination and muscle denervation changes. Standard MRI may miss microscopic or purely functional injuries; nerve conduction studies and EMG assess electrical function. High-resolution MR neurography improves peripheral nerve visualization and helps localize lesions, but the optimal test depends on the suspected problem and clinical findings.

MR neurography studies are acquired by MRI technologists within a radiology department and performed under radiologist supervision. Images are interpreted by radiologists with nerve-imaging expertise—commonly neuroradiologists or musculoskeletal radiologists. Referring clinicians (neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons) request the exam and collaborate on results; contrast administration or any image-guided procedures are done by radiologists or trained MRI staff.

Some nerve damage can be repaired, especially in peripheral nerves which can regenerate slowly if the nerve sheath is intact. Minor injuries often recover with time, physiotherapy, and medications; severe injuries may require surgery (nerve repair or grafts), electrical stimulation, or other interventions. Central nervous system injuries (brain, spinal cord) have limited natural regeneration, though rehabilitation and emerging therapies can improve function.

Yes. MRI can detect muscle damage by showing tears, strains, contusions, inflammation and fluid/edema, as well as chronic changes like fatty infiltration and atrophy. It gives excellent soft‑tissue contrast to localize injury, assess severity, and identify associated tendon or bone involvement. Very small or very early microscopic changes may be missed; ultrasound or clinical assessment can complement MRI when needed.
