MRI Scan Mammography

MRI mammography, or breast MRI, is a radiation-free imaging test that uses magnetic fields, radio waves and usually intravenous gadolinium contrast to produce detailed breast images. It’s used for high‑risk screening, clarifying unclear findings, assessing cancer extent before surgery and evaluating implants. MRI is highly sensitive but less specific than mammography and complements, rather than replaces, conventional mammograms.

Yes, breast MRI can detect cancer, especially with contrast-enhanced scans. It is more sensitive than mammography and helps with high-risk screening, staging known cancer, and imaging dense breasts or implants. However, MRI is less specific (more false positives), may miss tiny calcifications, and isn’t a routine replacement for mammography or ultrasound; use depends on individual risk.

Breast MRI is generally not very painful. You lie face‑down with breasts in a cushioned coil; there’s no hard compression like mammography. Discomfort may come from lying still, machine noise, or a brief sting/warmth from contrast injection. Some people feel claustrophobic or sore from the position, but most find it tolerable; staff can offer ear protection, breaks, or mild sedation.

An MRI may be recommended after a mammogram when results are inconclusive, the breasts are dense, or a patient is at higher risk for breast cancer. MRI is more sensitive for detecting additional or hidden lesions, evaluating implant integrity, staging known cancer, assessing extent before surgery, or checking for recurrence. It also helps guide biopsy and treatment planning.

You should not wear a bra for a breast MRI. Before the scan you'll be asked to change into a gown and remove bras, jewelry, and any clothing with metal (including underwire or metallic threads). Bras can create artifacts, degrade image quality, and pose safety risks. If unsure, follow the imaging center’s instructions about MRI-safe garments and accessories.

A breast MRI typically costs, depending on country and setting: in the US about $400–$3,500+ (higher at specialist centers); in the UK it's free on the NHS but private scans run ~£300–£800; in India roughly ₹3,000–₹12,000.
